Hi to all who actually read this thing,
I figured it was about time for me to reflect on what has been going on in my life lately.
Student Teaching
On Friday, I finished teaching at Atlantic. In the morning, I thought I wouldn't really miss it, but in retrospect, I miss the students and some of the teachers.
My classes included 2 sections of 8th grade pre-algebra, 1 section of algebra 1 (8th grade), and I was supposed to teach a 7th grade math class on the last day, but that never happened, unfortunately.
Yes, it was crazy at times; yes, I need to improve on my classroom management skills; yes, I know that I cannot teach math as abstractly as I can understand. Now that I have this semester (or rather, these 12 weeks) with new ideas and new understandings of old ideas under my belt, I'm ready to implement what I've learned.
Ukraine
This next school year, I will be returning to Ukraine to teach math at Kiev Christian Academy!!! I'll be with the middle/high school students, but I'm not sure which classes I'll have just yet. During the summer, I'll be traveling to churches in MD/DE/PA/WV to raise the $10,000-$12,000 that will be used to pay for my expenses while I am there (KCA does not pay a salary). For more info you can check out http://web.nazarene.org/goto/ukrainejh, and I am working on a Ukraine blog.
Finishing Up ENC Life
During the past few days being back on campus for most of the day, I've not really known what to do with myself. I can stay up late and sleep in because I don't really have to be anywhere until lunchtime. However, I know that I have plenty of schoolwork to do -- my Education portfolio is due next Friday, I have an adolescent psychology test to take, and I have to work on things for my independent study.
It's been strange being back in the middle of the day, and it's almost like reverse culture shock. I've been out of the loop for so long about things, or I've heard about events through the grapevine. ENC is a different world from Atlantic--in fact, ENC is a bit of a bubble when it comes to knowing what's going on in the world!
People have asked if I would spend my free weeks at home, but these are my last few weeks with my ENC friends/family--I want to make every moment count!
"Some people came back silent, and some talked incessantly as though talking about a thing would make it vanish. Actually, just the opposite is true: once things and thoughts are expressed and described they acquire a new reality, as though by giving them words we give them part of ourselves. After that, they will not allow us to leave them behind." (Under a Cruel Star, 42)

"One of these things, is not like the other things, one of these things just doesn't belong..."
I have just finished my two first days of classes for spring semester, and boy does it look like a crazy semester.
CLASSES....
MWF
9:05am Living Issues--required core class, relating to ethics and morality. This one should be no problem, and I'm looking forward to it. Severson's a good professor, and a couple of my friends are in the course.
11:30am Theology II. That's right, I'm in Theology II. Have I ever taken Theology I? Nope. Am I a religion major? Нет. (pronounced NYET, which is no in Russian). Am I looking at going into "the ministry"? Not exactly...though I'm not closing off the possibility.
That's where the title of this blog comes in: "One of these things is not like the other things, one of these things just doesn't belong, can you guess which thing is not like the other things, before I finish my song?" (old Sesame Street song)
I signed up for the course because I am attempting to have a religion minor (which, as it turns out, I won't finish) as a way to fill out my schedule for this year. I thought the course was an independent course, but it isn't quite that way. I think there's an article that the prof will give me from last semester, so I'm not terribly lost.
12:50pm Trigonometry. No problem here--in fact, it'll be a break after Theology II. Nadine's in this class, along with some more of my friends.
T/Th:
11am Differential Equations. So far so good. I just have to get used to Hammerstrom's way of teaching, as opposed to Lovett's. Plus, I haven't done any sort of calculus in a year, nor have I had Hammerstrom in a year.
4pm (Th). Developing Reading Skills in the Content Area. Andrew and I are the only undergrads in this course, but it's with Fiacco, so it won't be bad.
6pm (Tu until 2/19). Educ Assessment. I'll be glad when this 5-week sprint of a course is done! Whew! Lots of work to do in a small space of time. After this date, I'll be back down to 15 credits, and how nice that will be. :)
JOBS....
3 hours a week in CAS, editing papers, helping with math, and working on the stats.
2 hours a week tutoring students at Atlantic Middle.
2 hours a week tutoring a student in the library.
Babysitting as needed.
CHURCH INVOLVEMENT....
Finishing out the season of Bible quizzing with Wollaston
Potentially helping with the S. Weymouth youth group
MISSIONS INVOLVEMENT...
Preparing for my own trip to the Ukraine with Youth in Mission! Yeah!
Leading Advance Training for all the YIM students from ENC for this summer.

Being a college student is fun. Most of the time.
I am 99% finished my 10 lesson plans for Ed Psych. All I have to do "tomorrow" is tweak one a bit, do some formatting, and then print it to hand in. After that, I'm done most of my work!
At about 1 am, I decided that I needed to get the oxygen moving in my body again, so I ran around the front lawn twice. Where else can you do crazy things like that except at college?
Next week before I take my finals, I have to do some Arts and Music papers, study for Linear, and study for Christian Tradition. Then I'm DONE!!!!
I can't wait for the end of the semester to really be here, because it means I will be moving out of the dorm and into the KP's house for the rest of the month. I won't have any homework to do, but will be able to read FUN books again! I'll put that reading list up shortly.
On May 29th, I will be heading to Kansas City for my YOUTH IN MISSION trip to Mexico!!!!!!!!! I honestly haven't had time to be excited, or at least I haven't allowed myself time, due to school stresses. Not to mention, I've been trying to practice my Spanish, work on figuring out how to raise the money for the trip (but that's all done now! Yay God! Thank you for providing for me!), and a whole host of other things. Maybe the rest of this month will be a nice time of relaxing and preparing!
Last weekend was quizzing Regionals, and the short summary of the weekend is this: crazy, intense, stressful, fun, and we stayed in a sketchy hotel. But that's another story for another blog.
It's almost 2 am. I need to go to bed! I'm a little loopy right now, in case you can't tell. At least I can sleep in tomorrow till who knows when.
(yes I know I just typed this blog after writing about 7 pages of a paper, but I really just needed to do SOMETHING before I went to bed. it's a really pointless entry, I'll admit.)

spring schedule
First, J-term:
~Human Exceptionalities from 8:30-12:30, with a break somewhere in there, along with lunch
~Working at CAS, maybe 6-9 hours a week
~Babysitting anywhere from 2-4 hours a week
~Quizzing once a week for an hour and half
~plus studying, plus the quiz meet the first weekend
Doesn't seem too bad.
Spring Semester:
~Arts and Music
~Science and Religion
~Christian Tradition
~Educ Psych
~Linear Algebra (4 credits)
That's pretty intense. Now add:
~about 6 hours of work at CAS
~2-4 hours a week babysitting
~quizzing each week and quiz meets in February and March (I don't know about April)
~lots of reading/studying, I can feel it
~Not to mention preparing for YIM
Yikes!
I'm ready for it, I think. I got thru last semester okay. I want my independence back (i.e., back to the dorm!). This weekend I'm going to my dad's, and I get to visit the Easton church. Hooray!

saying it again...
Yes, everyone, I've said this a bazillion times, but I LOVE WOLLY QUIZZING.
Tonight was our last practice before all of us ENCers head out for break. Sadly, it was also Shea's and Jenny O's last practice ever. I'm wicked sad that they're leaving. Shea because there will now be a "Shea-shaped hole" in quizzing, in Science and Religion class next semester, and in life overall. Jenny O because she is cool and from out west and now has named what I'm doing next fall. :)
We "gave each other gifts" in the form of compliments, saying what we appreciated about the group as a whole, or about specific individuals. It was wonderful. Especially the goodies Sondra brought.
First of all, Lucas kept us all laughing...not constantly, but still. He asked me if the little koosh type dinosaur was edible (the one that looked like Jennie's Phillip). Ohhh Lucas. He shared at least 5 times, and Prof stopped him after 5 (or so). One of the times, he couldn't remember what he was going to say (seems to happen a lot?), and said something along the lines of 30
seconds would pass, and then he'd get it wrong, but then remember. Haha.
Second, it was just good for everyone to see that they were appreciated for SOMETHING, even if it's not always said. Like me with my organization and "logic"--"It's a good logic, it's not a mean logic," Luke said. Heh. And then a little while later, I was like, "Hey guys, for all this talk of organization, Jenny O's card seems to have vanished." Then it was found. :) You also had the people who were simply described by their names--Preston and Andrew. :)
So yeah, I'm definitely a "words of affirmation" type person. :) Pastor Mike called me right
before dinner!!!! I haven't talked to him in what seems like eons! I only got to talk to him for a little bit before eating, but I'm going to call him Saturday once I'm done with stuff. I can't wait to catch up with him later.
I can't wait to hear about YIM...though...one of my references didn't get in to them. Hopefully that'll be fine. If God wants me to go, I'll go. Easy as pie, right? I hope so.
I have to study now for Foundations of Ed and Calc 3. Gross. At least the room is quiet for right now. These next few days are going to be some intense days of working and studying. BUT...at least I'm done with CAS for the semester!
Kbye.
