Students Say the Darndest Things...

In the past couple weeks, I've been subbing at local middle schools and my high schools. The students have said some pretty entertaining stuff, and though I won't remember them all, here are some quotes for your enjoyment.
____________
Me: Have you done your illustration for the story?
7th grade boy (points to a blank sheet of paper): Yeah, it's right here. Oh, man! I forgot! I shouldn't have used invisible ink! Now I'm going to have to start all over!
____________
7th grade boy, excited about speaking in Spanish to me: Score ONE for the home team! (which might be my new saying. Isn't that sad--picking up sayings from middle schoolers?)
____________
Some girls had this spray candy (think breath freshener, but sour), and offered it to this guy to try.
Guy (coughs): It's not too bad!
Me: Yeah, after the first cough.
____________
After completing all her assignments for the day, this girl asked what else there was to do--I told her there were no more assignments, but she could find something to do while sitting quietly at her desk. "Do you mind if I sit there and sew?" Sew?! Go for it!

A Good Finish

This weekend was my last New England quiz meet (not counting Regionals) for a long time, if ever again. Sad. I know I'll see a handful of them at Regionals in a month, or in other contexts, and I'll still "see" them on Facebook. But still, this weekend began my goodbyes that I am saying in the next couple months.

HIGHLIGHTS!

Friday night:
*Hitting the PANIC button on my remote key, thus setting off my car alarm as I opened my trunk. Then when I went to close it, I hit Matt's arm with the trunk hatch. Sorry, Matt.
*We got lost on our way there. Really lost. Like going into downtown Lowell when we didn't have to. I asked a police officer for directions (stereotypically enough, he was at Dunkin's), and then we were looking for VFW parkway, a McDonald's, and... a legit bridge (i.e., one that actually went over water, not a road). We finally found the "legit bridge", and then...made not just one wrong turn, but 2.
*"SLOW--Senior Citizen Zone" and "SENIOR SAFETY ZONE" signs were by the Council on Aging. After taking pictures of these, and following directions from a random person in an apartment complex parking lot, we went back to the original McDonalds.
*There we discovered the road we needed ALL ALONG, and it was next to a LEGIT BRIDGE!!! So frustrating!
*A cold night on the floor--I even had my head inside my sleeping bag! The temperatures were completely opposite from the way they are in my top bunk in Munro.

Saturday
*Quizmastering while ridiculously drowsy--until my hot tea (aka caffeine) kicked in!
*Matt had Jen and I come up after the high school seniors shared what their plans were for after graduation and what quizzing has meant to them, and thanked us for working with quizzing, and all that good stuff. Thanks, Matt for your antics but also your willingness to help!
*Also, a BIG thank you to all the NED quizzing folks that contributed toward my Ukraine trip fund -- the total was $109!!!

Saturday afternoon/evening
*Congratulations to Wolly's JV team (Nick, Emily, Cindi) for making it to Regionals as a JV local team!!! (2nd place)
*Congrats to Robert (varsity) and Nick (JV) for making the all-star teams!!
*Taking pictures of Matt while he was sleeping, and Jen taking pictures of us--I have a look of "I'm going to smile for the camera but I want to make sure I don't drive my car into another car or curb"
*Exhaustion.

mi vida.

This past weekend in Maine was pretty much amazing, in terms of fun and in terms of ministry stuff. Basically, not only did I get to hang out and have cool conversations with people, but I also got to help with junior high Sunday School, and lead Children's Church (I was totally applying some of what I learned in Ed Psych, it was crazy). I've learned that Prof is a fan of the "trial by fire" or "sink or swim" method of teaching you skills. Before Friday night, I didn't know that I'd be working with the Children's Church group. Before Saturday morning, I didn't know that I'd be primarily responsible for figuring stuff out. It more or less happens that upon arrival to a weekend, I find out close to exactly what I'm doing. But hey, it really helps you grow.

Here are just a few more words about the weekend.
~ministry: Sunday School, Children's Church, testimony time, mingling
~fun: sledding, games, Mafia, etc.
~injuries: chipped tooth, sprained ankle, injured knee, hitting upside the head
~studying
~doing rounds of quizzing to determine shower and eating order
~conversations
~sledding on old plastic caf trays from Rick

I also collected a ton of quotes. :)

*Jen on the phone: “Z as in xylophone”
*Jen S: “Do we have to go through New Hampshire?”
*Jess: “Oh look, this snow is powdery” (right foot plunges into snow)
*Jocey: “No! I don’t wanna be a druggie, gosh!”
*Jess: “Who needs vegetables at dinner when you can eat popcorn?”

*Joel: “I’m a perfectly normal and sane person…compared to the play”
*Sondra’s dream that Prof was on drugs
*Hannah: “It’s called a quiz meet, not a hangout meet”
*Prof: “Smack me if you want—it’ll still hurt”

*Joel: “Someday I want to be laughed with, not at”
Jen: “Say something funny and I’ll laugh with you”

*Prof (about Bible study): “And what does that mean?”
Hannah: “Studying the Bible”

*News headline on Yahoo: “Bush has two moles removed from temple” (this could totally be taken two different ways)
*Lucas: “Who would you like to violently evaporate?” (playing Mafia)
*Jen: “Welcome to New Hampshire! ...I mean Massachusetts!”
*Sondra: “What is it about us with men?” (to Deborah during a game of Guess Who?)
*Deborah: “You’re just gonna lay in a cold box for the rest of your...oh. You’re already dead.”

Joel: “Why do I get the feeling you’re lying?”

*(Hannah knocks chair over)
Joel/Jess, at the same time: “Shhhh!!!” (laughter) … “She just made a joke and she doesn’t know it.”
Hannah: “What joke?”

Today was the Ash Wednesday chapel. I learned that Sundays are feast days, in which you can enjoy what you've given up for Lent, as a way of celebrating and looking forward to the Resurrection. I definitely need this time of Lent, to be able to figure out (or try to at least) what God wants me to do. And you know, without Facebook to continuously check, there's only so much you can do online (so it seems right now). Hopefully I really use that freed-up time to actually read my Bible and pray.

I got to talk to Jen for a good long while tonight...It was really cool. I made fun of her at times, but all in good fun. Erin comes tomorrow to visit for Honors weekend, and I'm pretty excited. :)

I caught a glimpse of Your splendor
In the corner of my eye
The most beautiful thing I've ever seen
And it was like a flash of lightning
Reflected off the sky
And I know I'll never be the same

Show me Your glory
Send down Your presence
I want to see Your face
Show me Your glory
Majesty shines about You
I can't go on without You, Lord

When I climb down the mountain
And get back to my life
I won't settle for ordinary things
I'm gonna follow You forever
And for all of my days
I won't rest 'til I see You again

Show me Your glory
Show me Your glory
I can't live without You

home quiz!

This weekend there was a quiz meet here at Wolly, which was really weird because it was like two of my worlds were colliding. We ate lunch in the caf, and Novice was in Angell Hall. I scorekept for about half the day on the second floor of Wolly, and then for about 5-6 rounds I quizmastered while Leta scorekept. I wasn't agreeing with some of the calls she made, but then when I was quizmastering, I felt like all I was doing was calling people wrong. Ah well. Luke said they were "fair."

Memorable moments from the past 24 hours:
~Joline stealing Preston away from Kerri (in a SKIT!)
Lori: "I'm going to have to speak to my daughter after this"
Andrew: "No, I'M going to have to speak to your daughter"

~Jocey about the earlier chapters, "I still got it" and "Hallelujah!"

~I really officially met Alain, and I got to see Nandi for all of about 30 seconds.

~to Becky about 6 yr old Anne pretending she couldn't get up: "She hangs out with you"

~coming back to the dorm and freaking out Magon and Rebekah
Rebekah: "Whose purse is this?"
Magon: "Not mine"

"Body Piercing..." final quotes

Here it is, guys, the final installment. Maybe. I might have to split it again.

"'Darwin has had as big an impact on the evangelical church, maybe even more so than Jesus. Darwinism has set the tone and focus of the evangelical church in a way that's ludicrous.' By insisting that the Bible is an authoritative text on science, history, and the cosmos, Bazan said, the evangelical church has forced Christians to cultivate a faith that will "flounder" if the Bible's authority is challenged successfully." (132) Lately I've been learning that the Bible is not to be a science textbook or a history textbook. You can interpret historical events in the Bible in light of your textbook, but it's not to be a replacement. I almost feel like I have two timelines in my head--one that was taught in school and one from the Bible. The Bible one is linear, so that the Psalms happen AFTER the material in 1/2 Kings (or one of those history sections), as opposed to around the same time.

"Christians often complain that the mainstream media ignores Christian music, film, and art, and there very existence of their subculture presumes a need to set up an alternate universe with its own celebrities. The world outside this subculture is often portrayed as treacherous and best left alone." (155-6)

"[Contemporary worship music] is self-centered in a way that reflects evangelicalism's near-obsession with having a personal relationship with Christ. It's me Jesus died for. I just gotta praise the Lord." (159)

"The Jesus of worship music is a mentor, a buddy, a friend whose message is easily distilled to a simple command: praise me. Not 'feed the poor, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner.' Simply thank Him for His gift to you." (159)

"Now racism is viewed as much a personal failing, much like alcoholism, drug use, or any number of other moral shortcomings. That's been incredibly important in opening up the evangelicalchurch...allowing Christians to express disappointment at the moral blind spots of others while doing absolutely nothing further." (163) At my church at home, we have a few Japanese exchange students, little Michell (and occasionally her Nicaraguan mother and Puerto Rican dad), and that's about it. Very little diversity. I guess I can't say too much, cuz most of my friends from high school and church were white. Another thing I wonder at my church is the fact that within the past 8 years or so, we have had 3 couples get pregnant before they were married. What is lacking!?!? Where are we falling short as a church community? Just a side thought.

"[Casting Crowns'] lyrics challenge churches not to be so insular that they put off newcomers." (172)

"Christian people are taught to be ready to fight for their faith at a moment's notice. And to a certain degree, that is right. The Bible does say to be ready to defend the faith, but it's very clear that you're not supposed to sit around and nitpick at each other. It's one of the few clear things about the way you're supposed to treat your fellow brothers." (219-20)

"At the same time, I can't be worrying about every single little thing that's gonna offend somebody, because offending somebody and stumbling them are two totally different things." (222)

"College is the kind of place where, if you've grown up within the faith, you're gonna have to think through all this stuff and figure out what's yours and what was your folks' or the environment that you're coming from." (236-7, David Crowder) True story. I'm seeing that now...how my beliefs have shifted (honestly, to be a bit less conservative than I was before)...I'm seeing that morality and beliefs are not as clear-cut as I thought they once were.

"I think when Jesus was talking about the kingdom of heaven, he's speaking of the here and now, and we've got to make a difference in the way we treat people, the way we're responsible with the societies that we live within." (240--David Crowder)

"Somewhere in my heart is longing for something honest and eternal, and all I see is fads and corny T-shirts and young kids who were mostly raised and taught what they should think and haven't had a chance to question it." (263) This summer while I was home, I sat in on the teen Sunday school class, and it basically seemed that the teacher was teaching Creationism AT the class, with very little questioning.

"If I have two jackets, and this person doesn't have one jacket, I give them my extra one. That's just pure common sense. Our conscience tells us that, our Scripture tells us that, our reason tells us that. The only thing that doesn't tell us that is our greed, and the Devil, and the powers of this world who say, What's mine is mine." (263--Weiss) Lately (and not cuz it's Christmas), I'm trying to work through a lot of my stuff and try to live more minimally somehow. I'm not sure how it will ever work, since I'm a packrat. :)

"You know what Jesus called us to do is to come and die, suffer and sacrifice, lay down our lives for other people. Not try to live the most comfortable life we can or have a whole lot of fun or look a certain way." (264) Sometimes I feel like my youth group's activities are oriented around fun activities, meant to bring new people into the youth group. But yet the only discipleship things available are quizzing and Sunday school. Not a bad selection, but it just doesn't seem deep enough. I don't know.

"Body Piercing..." quotes part two

I have TONS of quotes to put up, and I don't want to force you to read them at once. So here's installment #2.

" 'The biggest category of God's word' in the Psalms, [Kaiser] says, 'has to do with pain, struggle suffering...God doesn't answer every one of our prayers; nor should He." (32) Reminds me of when Michael Card came to ENC and talked about laments.

a cliche: "Comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable."(49)

"Some people, they have a kind of narrow focus that usually widens later on. But I think Christians don't have a monopoly on truth. You can learn about truth from any other religion...pull truth from various sources." (52-DvP) The part about a narrow focus becoming wider is what has been happening to me since going to college, I think. But as far as the truth thing, you can find things that are true, you can also find things that reflect the Truth.

"In focusing on individual belief, evangelicals have necessarily focused on individuals....Poverty, hunger, abortion, drug abuse, and other such issues are approached as personal failings rather than social problems. Systemic elements simply aren't included in the equation" (65 from the book Apostles of Rock)

(Mark Driscoll) "In the Bible, we are told to be culturally relevant, love people who disagree with our Christian beliefs, and have friends and fun like Jesus did. Jesus was often invited to parties by scandalous people, was surrounded with large crowds who liked hanging with him, and was accused by stuffed shirt religious types of eating too much, drinking too much, and having the wronge kind of friends. But, Jesus never sinned. For example, he drank alcohol but did not get drunk, ate a lot but was not a glutton, and had some messed-up friends but never shagged any of the loose women who considered him a friend." (110) This is interesting considering one of my youth leaders once advised our teens to not hang out with their friends anymore if they started smoking or something. I've never been in that situation exactly, but I talk to friends that cuss and I don't cuss. Granted, maybe, in high school, I never let myself get close enough to people that I thought were too "out there" for my tastes, and maybe I could have, and not done the same things they did.

Ballmer about "dispensational premillenialism" (about end times): "this idea 'relieved evangelicals of the obligation to labor for the amelioration of social ills' and that they 'increasingly stood in judgement of culture and awaited its destruction, which would follow their translation into heaven.' In other words, all is not lost for unbelievers, but their salvation, much like their socioeconomic status, is their own responsibility." (122)
Sounds like they just sat there. And waited and twiddled their thumbs and waited some more. Interesting that the Nazarene denomination had such a great emphasis on helping the people on the streets (I think so anyway), and so much of the focus now is on international aid. Not a problem, mind you, but it seems at my church that if we just put some money in the offering plate we are making a REAL difference. Sometimes that's all we can do, but what if we took more of an interest in helping our neighbors....the ones that need help watching their kids, or need help learning to read, or to know English, or tutoring, or opening our homes to disconnected individuals? Instead of keeping in our own little Christian circles, and having people come to us, we should take the initiative and look in our own backyards.

"'As far as I'm aware, drink is mentioned in the Gospels three times,' Stockman replied--none of them having to do with prohibition. Social justice, on the other hand, is something Jesus talks about a lot." (135)

Heroes

Thanks to some college friends, I started watching the show Heroes on NBC. While home on break, I just caught up with the beginning episodes that I missed. Here are some quotes (episode # is in parentheses). It's interesting to think of these ideas in terms of ourselves as people as well as being Christians and to be helping others.

"Although unaware of it now, these individuals will not only save the world, but change it forever" (1)

"to do something extraordinary" (1)

"Every hero must learn his purpose. Then he'll be tested and called to greatness." (1)

"Every ten year old wishes he had superpowers. And I got them." (1)

"....when the human heart can only find meaning in the smallest of moments" (1)

"By taking action we've changed something" (3)

"Don't give your heart to just anyone" (ad on NY subway in episode 4)

"We are all connected." (5)

"Every hero is on a journey to find his place in the world. But it's a journey. You don't start at the end. Otherwise they can't make a movie about it later." (6) haha

"In the end all that matters is love." (7)

"I'm gonna put this thing on YouTube and make like a million bucks!"
"YouTube's free, you idiot!" (7)

"When I'm by myself, I'm not really anything" (9)

"How do you stop an exploding man?" (9)

summer!

What a week. I got to go to Impact this past weekend, and that was great. It was great to see everyone again, even if it was one of the last times. I now have a video of the "House on Fire" skit on my computer, which is pretty exciting. :)

This week I'm babysitting just about every day. I didn't get the job at Camp Wright, so basically my work is going to happen here and there. I applied to work at summer school in the KCPS, but that's in July, so I have about a month to spend doing random stuff. Cassi told me there are new places in the Outlets that are hiring, so I'm going to try to work there. The bad thing is that it's half an hour away and will use up all my precious gasoline. I miss the T. :)

More quotes:
~"Further up and further in!" (The Last Battle)
~Erin H, about the volume of the music: "We can't hear each other think!"
~"In the end Eustace and Jill begged so hard that Tirian said they could come with him and take their chance--or, as he much more sensibly called it, 'the adventure that Aslan would send them.' " (The Last Battle)

allnighter

Oh man that was a fun night. A whole bunch of us pulled an all-nighter and watched the sun rise.

At around 6:30pm, we went into Boston to Harvard Square to walk around. We ended up going to Baskin' Robbins and Dunkin Donuts, before just plain wandering around.

Once we got back, I took a nap from 11:15-12:15. Rachel woke me up, and I was so out of it. She poked me and I didn't even wake up right away. Apparently I asked her when she was leaving, and getting up, and said "What the crap" a couple of times. Then I decided I wasn't going to go, so Rachel left. Then I followed her down the hall to go talk to Shawn and Magon. After I got back, I decided I did want to go after all. So I went.

We stayed out till sunrise, and laughed and ate candy and snacks. I came back to campus around 4 am to go to the bathroom, and didn't fall asleep at all while on the beach. We played the "ten fingers" game, aka "Never have I ever..." I got a lot of great quotes.

Pictures can be seen on my facebook account:
http://enc.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2001835&l=dfa36&id=149000082

Erica: "Was that you that changed my background?"
Troxler: "No, it was Jiminy Cricket. Let your conscience be your guide."

Magon, talking about the name Jesus: "How is it a word?"

Pearl: "Are you putting ENC on the same level as Jesus?"

Pearl: "Lightbulbs? Who likes lightbulbs?" (makes camera flash) "How about now? Do you like lightbulbs now?"

Marie: "Goodness gracious Christians"

somebody: "Anna's fish is a [censored]"

somebody else: "I thought I had mono for an entire year. Then it turned out I was just bored."

(I took a picture right next to Marie's face) Marie: "My whole life flashed before my eyes!"

~spin the corn pops

Pearl: "A salty sugary chocolatey snack? That sounds DISGUSTING."

Me: "I wish I had friends" (at this point they thought I would leave it at that) "in other time zones so I could call them in the middle of the night"

~apparently boys make better machine gun sounds than girls

Pearl: "You almost lashed out at me out of habit."

~coming back from the T, I think it might have been Shawn that said, "I'm dumb, okay?" Someone heard "Gollum" from that, and then Preston, from "gollum" heard "You're Allah?"

Leman at 3:24 am (for this one quote I decided that writing down the times would be interesting, but ended up not continuing it): "Well I'm going to lay down in the fetal position"

Shawn: "Sorry Andrew Leman for kicking you in the head."

Troxler, saying this before a question was even asked: "Oh I know the answer."

Pearl: "My toe is falling asleep."

~a raccoon glared Ben and I down on our way back to the beach at 4 am

Troxler, on her sleeping bag: "This smells like chocolate. That's because I'm sleeping on chocolate."

Erica: "I don't trash on me"

Leman: "Are there any fish out there?" (in Quincy Bay)
Pearl: "Yeah, but they have three eyes"

Magon: "Jess, move your head to the left"
(I move my head to my left)
Magon: "That's not your left"
me: "Yes it is"

Lord of the Beans

Here are some quotes from the Veggie Tales video "Lord of the Beans." I got it last fall, and found these quotes I had written down while watching it.

"I am NEVER late. I arrive precisely when I attend to." ~Randalf

"...stretched like chocolate pudding scraped across too much ham!" ~Billboy

"Small kitchen appliances??!?!?! Small kitchen appliances!"

"If you can read this, you're too close." ~Toto
"Other side." ~Randolf

"Use wisely." (the bean)
"Every gift is given for a reason."
"I don't think I can do it on my own."

(about the other elf) "He's pretty good in the kitchen."

"And for this, I'm missing taco night?" ~Grumpy the dwarf

"No, he was blown off in a windstorm." ~Randolf

"It's a highly efficient language. You can fit a whole book on a napkin."

"We can't choose what we get, only what we do with it."

"I'm a lucky fellow, I'm a lucky boy, I've got a new umbrella, and it's me pride and joy"

"Green one go away! Go kiss a spork!"

"Much wind pours from your mouth...I leave now to do laundry"

"Watch out for their pointy ends!"

"Something smell good"

"We ain't have nothin but maggoty bread for three days. Of course I'd like a cookie"

"Nothing tastes better than a cookie baked in a tree!"

Spork: "Cookie man say no!"
Scaryman: "Oh, bother!"

quotations...!

Talking to Suzanne while she was behind Spange: "How can we find you if you're hiding?" (erm, isn't that the point?)

Me: "If you ever need ribbon, I have a bunch."
Rachel: (no response, then...) "Did I respond to you? Cuz I did in my head"

Magon: "Marie, that's a really nasty looking something something on your spoon."
"We could change our name to Eastern Mormon College"...Matt: "5 rings by spring or your money back!"

<-- Google backwards!

Goings-on of Thursday:
~went to Severson's lecture on cities of refuge and "the church as asylum"
~saw The Blue Light and other stories....GO SEE IT! IT's AMAZING!!!
~talked to Ann who went to Belize with me...I miss them so much....hopefully I'll see her next week and we'll go find people (ahem) during open dorms bwahaha.
~playing cards in Spange...and Sam and I doing tricks that no one else knew:

Shawn: "I'm going to go find someone else Nazarene and get them to explain it to me"

Shawn: "I have no idea what I just said, i'm so tired, stuff just came out of my mouth"
Sam: "Like spit?"

Awww....I was reading an article online about Romanian orphanages, and they had a picture of this little girl peeking from behind a chair. She was so adorable...

Yeah. Just thought I'd share with you....it was an interesting article too.

****edit****
Oh wow had some interesting adventures tonight....I rode the T into South Station, only to find out my mom was almost back at North Quincy, which I then went to...We got a ride from the hotel shuttle (driven by a Brazilian!), and went to the hotel for a little bit, then I caught the shuttle again back to the T, and went back to ENC.

I also got to talk to Olivia, part while I was in CVS, and part once I got back. It was good to talk to her. :)

Oh! my mom brought me lots of goodies...I'm most excited about a bunch of black ballpoint pens, my Joe Holt CD, laundry quarters, and my "portfolios" of sorts (my compilation of stories/papers I've written since I was a kid up to pre-graduating).

A whole bunch of us hung out in Spange tonight, and it was a lot of fun...

Cameron: "So, Jess, how bout that quiz today? It really ATE MY LUNCH!"

"Let's get mugged together!" (the idea of going on a TWIRP/MOP date to the T station)

Ben: "Who has my hat?"
Josh: "Jocelyn doesn't have it!"

Erin: "It looks like one of those...what are they called?....Ritz sandwiches"

Erin: "Jocelyn, you're the reason I get up in the morning"
Joe: "Is she that loud?"

just up to no good, really...

(was that a hint of a British-ism?)

I've been working on reading The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide, by Douglas Adams. Here are some quotes I've compiled that I like. (The page numbers are cumulative for all the books, so there is no singular book that is 600 pages long. Unless of course you put it in size 64 font.)

Douglas Adams on…

Existence…

“In fact the only Oglaroonians who ever leave their tree are those who are hurled out of it for the heinous crime of wondering whether any of the other trees might be capable of supporting life at all, or indeed whether the other trees are anything other than illusions brought on by eating too many Oglanuts.” (p. 194)

Romance…

“Their songs are on the whole very simple and mostly follow the familiar theme of boy-being meets girl-being beneath a silvery moon, which then explodes for no adequately explored reason.” (p. 221)

Falling Apart…

“You go to pieces so fast people get hit by the shrapnel.” (p. 231)

Talking…

“His first theory was that if human beings didn’t keep exercising their lips, their mouths probably shriveled up. After a few months of observation he had come up with a second theory, which was this—‘If human beings don’t keep exercising their lips, their brains start working.’” (p. 252)

Intimidation…

“Number Two’s eyes narrowed and became what are known in the Shouting and Killing People trade as cold slits, the idea presumably being to give your opponent the impression that you have lost your glasses or are having difficulty keeping awake. Why this is frightening is an, as yet, unresolved problem.” (p. 267)

Flight of People…

“The Guide says that there is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.” (p. 322)
